credit history,. Under the U.S. federal system, there are two types of
bad credit student loan. These are the Federal Perkins Loan and the Federal Stafford
Loan.
Features of the Federal Stafford Loan:-
• A Federal Stafford loan is easy to apply for if you want to go to college but
have bad credit.
• Interest rates for these Federal student loans are significantly lower than
those of personal loans, credit cards and even home equity loans.
• This bad credit student loan is available to all students at an affordable
interest rate determined at the time of the loan (capped at 8.25%).
• This bad credit student loan is available as both a subsidized and
unsubsidized loan, depending on students needs.
Subsidized loan:-
Subsidized loan is loan for which the student is not responsible for all of the
interest payments. The government pays the interest that incurred on subsidized
loans during the school, grace, and (if applicable) post-deferment grace
periods, if the loan meets certain eligibility requirements.
A Subsidized loan is awarded on the basis of financial need. The government
distributes subsidized loan amounts based on financial need.
Unsubsidized loan:-
Unsubsidized are those Loans where the borrower, have to pay all accrued
interest. The Government does not offer any sort of aid relating to interest
payments for unsubsidized loans. Unsubsidized Loan is not awarded on the basis
of need. You’ll be charged interest from the time the loan is disbursed until it
is paid in full.
You may choose to pay the interest as you go or have it accrue and be added to
the principle amount upon repayment. There is a small loan fee. The interest may
be capitalized as long as the student is attending school at least half-time.
Payments of principal and interest begin once the six-month grace period
expires. This loan may only be applied for if it appears on your Statement of
Financial Aid Eligibility. Students are determined to be ineligible for
need-based financial aid may still apply for an Unsubsidized Federal Stafford
Loan.
Features of Federal Perkins Loan:-
• This type of bad credit student loan is made through the college or school the
student is attending.
• This type of bad credit student loan is funded partially by the government.
• This type of bad credit student loan is typically a low-interest loan (around
5%), with repayments made to the school.
• Interest rates for these Federal student loans are significantly lower than
those of personal loans, credit cards and even home equity loans.
Grants are another source of finance for students with bad credit. These grants
can be in form of the Federal Pell Grant and the Federal Supplemental Education
Opportunity Grant. These bad credit student loan programs gives grants to
students depending on the needs and criteria of the student. These bad credit student loan programs are available regardless of income level and, in some
cases till you are attending schools the government pays all the loan interest.
Students, who are attending alternative post-secondary schools such as a
vocational school and have bad credit, may also qualify for student loans if
your school qualifies for Title Federal loan program. The student could also
receive private loans even if the school does not qualify for Federal loan
program.
